Shark week!

This week is shark week! It was originally developed to raise awareness and respect for sharks.

I’ve never seen a real shark, but I’m always on the lookout.

I think they’re pawesome! They’re sleek and streamlined, with several rows of teeth which they can even replace! Their internal skeleton is made of flexible cartilage and they have extremely tough skin. Sharks are of course very recognisable by their dorsal fin.

Predatory sharks can smell or taste tiny amounts of blood when water passes over highly sensitive membranes in their nostrils.

Great White Sharks are some of the most powerful predators in the world. Unfortunately, they have a reputation for being killing machines, they have made more attacks on humans than any other shark. Most of these attacks can be put down to the shark mistaking a human for a seal or a turtle though, I don’t think they really like the taste of humans.

In Cornwall in the Southwest of the UK, there are often basking sharks which are far less scary. It’s the worlds second largest fish but they just swim open mouthed along the surface eating plankton. I would love to watch them, my humans have seen them and say they seem like they’d be friendly!

Sadly sharks are heavily fished all over the world for their meat, fins, skin and liver oil. It takes a long time for these kings of the ocean to both reproduce and grow so I hope that by raising awareness during shark week that this overfishing will be stopped.

There are hundreds of sharks of all shapes and sizes…

I’m going to keep enjoying watching the little fish until one day when I’m hoping to see a real life shark!
